Guten Morgen! Well, what do you know! This the second issue of ANIME NEWS TALK, and so far, [we're doing introductions;] nothing really new is going on yet. First off though, I'd like to point out that Takahashi Rumiko had a birthday not too long ago ('57/10.10), so "Ome deto" Fraulein! Now, if you were wondering about my title, yes, that is Deutsch. Er, German even. It was the name of my "personal" message base, when I ran a BBS, before the system had a HD failure. So, to keep it "alive" so to speak, I have made it usable here as well. What does it translate into? Basically, something like "From the desk of Drachenwald Besatzung". And "Drachenwald Besatzung" is the name of a Fantasy RPG city I have been working on since my early years of AD&D during '84 to the present. And yes, the title is German as well. But I'm not going to tell you what it means! (^_^) As you can tell, I have changed the format of the Newsletter a bit. Now, with the expansion of the Table of Contents by the inclusion of "Jump" points and defining what is in each section, it will be easier to "Jump" to a certain section instead of treading your way through it all. Simple, neh? I have also added a new person to the "staff" of ANIME NEWS TALK. He is a nice person in a strange sense. And yes, he is also an Amiga user. Steve Nordquist is his name, and he lives in Kansas. The state opposite of mine, and opposite of Kansas City as well. I'll let him tell about himself if he wants. No sense in me trying to explain a person. Might mess up. About computers. Yes, I know there are lots of brands out there. But, I will still concentrate mainly on the Amiga and IBM sides. The reason being that I mainly see these two in the Kansas City area more than anything else in terms of BBS and users, with IBM taking the #1 spot. About the issues of ANIME NEWS TALK. Well, the size will vary from month to month, and every now and then, I might want to "specialize" in a certain item (read: SPECIAL ISSUE). Some "special" issues in the future will be some like SILENT MOBIUS (Kia Asamiya), Masamune Shirow (DOMINION, APPLESEED) or even BUBBLEGUM CRISIS. Now, saying "special" issue doesn't necessarily mean _everything_ in that package will be on that particular spotlight, but a good portion of the graphics and reviews might be though. And yes, in each issue there will be graphics, of course. However, in terms of having MODs or sound samples each issue, that is an unknown. Either I have them or I don't. They will not always be there. However, if you folks can submit stuff like MODs and sound samples, in a format I can accept (namely the Amiga :), then it will be highly likely that it will be included. Speaking of including little goodies, there is probably a likelihood of you already having the item. However, here in the Kansas City area, where anime is practically NIL: in findings, its new to the folks! Please be patient. I cannot get spectacular new things all the time; else my pocketbook would be screaming bloody murder every time I pull it out. How to pick up the ANIME NEWS TALK? Well, it will be available in the Kansas City area of course. I will make it available on GEnie of course. And FREQable for folks with Fidonet capabilities. As for Internet FTP, I am not sure how to post, but will try and work on that in the future if I can figure out how to do such a thing. If you folks can help out by spreading it around, many thanks to you then. One thing to note is that the default archive package is LHA (Lharc). The ZIP packages will be available also, for folks with no LHA uncompressor. I am digressing though from this issue. This issue is a bit different, as you can tell. For one, it's bigger! Why? Because there is a music file which you folks can listen to! There are some graphics, and yes, there is even a GIF in it; although I'm not a GIF fan. For those who missed out on CNN Hollywood Spotlight, there is a recap of it down there. Addresses for folks who wants to buy things and other items that is too much to mention that is probably mentioned already in the Table of Contents. As a "look" into the future, I have plans for the following issues, but as with all things in life, Murphy's Law will come into play probably. Here is some of the special "Spotlight" issues that I am planning on: ANT92NOV (Volume 1, Issue 3) -- BUBBLEGUM CRISIS ANT92DEC (Volume 1, Issue 4) -- SILENT MOBIUS ANT93JAN (Volume 1, Issue 5) -- DIRTY PAIR ANT93FEB (Volume 1, Issue 6) -- DOMINION ANT93MAR (Volume 1, Issue 7) -- APPLESEED And more. True, probably a little silly in thinking ahead. But, at least it gives you folks an idea of what will be happening. Again, I must point out that it is just an idea. Nothing final. I think. Another thing is, that this newsletter is FREE! If you want to send money or whatever (newsletters even!), that's fine. I'm sure a use can be found for those things. Until the next issue, beware ladies in striped-bikinis, and strange looking kids running around with pails of hot water. Mata ne! -- Larry Clevenger 9210.13 ... Darling no baka! ============================================================================= Section iii Go nishi 'Oz' desu Now that it's October, and you've started on the red 'Smarties', (but aren't into lighting the 'big' oven yet,) you'll participate in celebrating fall. There are debates, for example, between advocates of making fruit still in the refrigerator into wine or candy, or possibly into mulch. You'll want to discuss S-VHS and Laser Video equipment with members of the family who can't find "STOP" on the remote control. Mention the fine recipe for beans in a Martha Stewart book. (Mmmm!) You may even want to plan ahead for entrepreneurial influences on your business for 1993; or what video you really need to rent NOW. Japanese animation (anime) on VHS is my first choice, because the tomatoes would make terrible candy, and I've seen three Ridley Scott films this year. Anime wouldn't be number one, sorry, if two things weren't true: Firstly, that Anime's sincere and direct. If Rick Sanada or Da Cider fights badly, he'll bleed, get knocked out and hallucinate, die and come back like _The Terminator,_ or defect in order to save his butt. If Nadia-Po keeps her faith and principle, she may rescue her mother (and her mother's plot?!) from hell, but roast in burning coffee beans while three episodes pass. (Later, she'll see Nirvana when sipping Cafe Latte.) This video is challenging, character-building stuff that works the viewer's mind as much as the characters'. No math (sorry) and no suspension of disbelief are required. Secondly, that people form lifetime preferences when they're five. Theoretically, my nephew will search his entire life after turtles and spoilt daughters of entrepreneurs. and the USA will still buy war bonds. But I regress; the good stuff's out there--some of it subtitled--and it could help you rescue YOUR mother from hell. (Of course your mother-in- law's SOMEONE'S angel, but whose? Would your kid come for you...?) Heaven save us from 1:1 idiomatic translations. Japanese dialogue happens to include english for emphasis (e.g. CHINATOWN is called just that) and avoids technical (Chinese) for Japanese TechSpeak. The result is Japanese as standardized by Billui Gateksu in 900 B.C.E., which is practical especially for humor and for training electronics staff. It's also interestingly polite, and packed with business guts; throw away your Biz-books-on-cassette! As an example of 1:1 Japanese translation, try (from a 1930s police station's signage): When a passenger of the foot hove in view, tootle the horn; trumpet at him melodiously at first, but if he still obstacles your passage tootle him with vigor and express by word of mouth warning, "Hiii." Beware the festive dog that shall sport in the roadway. Avoid entanglement of dog with wheel spokes. or Japanese from 1990 (as logged by Miranda Kenrick in a YEN book,) A health drink is "made from the natural source and sometimes something appears on the surface but never mind. Shake it well and take it." You'd therefore dabble in Japanese to better enjoy Nausicaa; Carl Macek (Streamline) had the film dubbed over in a rough translation and distributed as _Warriors Of The Wind_ which might be at your local video rental temple. _Warriors_ is a beautiful, beautiful epic which offers a much better role model than Bambi or Ariel or George Bush. When you've finished crying, grab another Kleenex. Note then that 20 minutes of poetic animation and japanese-- on environmental topics-- were cut from the Macek dub. That cut is called a [Manners! -ed.] That 20 minutes, folks, is why WE are here. (Toothy Grin) As defenders of the popularity of all that's real good or better, foes of entertainment that's redundant, and as video freaks, we want you to watch THE BEST. You needn't stop purchasing American video, or snub _Howard's End_, but if you've got a pulse to beat _Babette's Feast_ (2:43, 10 of which is interesting due to eye candy of good cooking).... Go to the nearest foreign videos shop, or grab the phone, and arrange for some anime. THEN write your congressperson about the Halloween party you're having. Mention food. Mention high-test video. (Warning: Disc Playing; Amprifire!) I'd like to know if anyone out there cares to read this in PostScript format, so pictures (color and b&w) could be included with the text here. PostScript would -also- let us define a page 1174 lines long with hiragana, cranes, et cetera. Those of you who are still with me here raise a hand if you'd require a PostScript 'more' program, please, Oh, yes, if you're reading PAPER here, that's fine! Thank you! -- The Staff of ANIME NEWS TALK ============================================================================= Section 3 My opinion of ... ------------ Part 3.1 From: Bruce Carlson [Recieved as a FidoNet message] Subj: Luna Varuga Luna Varuga is Sword & Sorcery silliness. Luna is a cute & sassy swordswoman defending the kingdom from an invading army (with the help of her friend who shape-changes into a flying panther.) Since the invaders have a Goliath for a commander, Luna's outmatched. So the old wizard goes down beneath the castle dungeons to summon the ancient powers that wait there. Except an enthusiastic Luna accidentally knocks the old wiz down the stairs and KOs him, so she has to go herself. Below, a voice from the brilliant light asks "Do you want power?" This is a trick question, but Luna's got pressing problems and so says Gimme. And so Varuga is unleashed. Varuga is from Godzilla's family tree. He knows exactly what to do with invading armies (hey, Varuga, what's that goo between your toes?) However, Luna is a part of the team. The young lady is perched on his head, her butt firmly attached to Varuga's forehead. Thus, "Luna Varuga". After the clash, the reverse transformation is less than perfect, and Luna is left with a 5' green scaly tale. But the invading captain still is after her, and an even more ominous 3rd party has kidnapped her girlfriend. So the farce is off to other countries. The humor is childish, but occasionally funny. The art's fair, and the animation's OK. RATINGS: Art: 4 Animation: 5 Action: 5 Plot: 5 Character: 3 Music: 4 Blood n Guts: 4 Slimey Tentacles: 4 Hunks: 4 Babes: 5 Mecha: 1 Sexual content: 2 Perversion: 0 Chills: 2 Comedy: 6 Tears: 1 ------------ Part 3.2 From: Donovan Floyd [Fidonet 1:124/1005] Subj: Giant Robo Oav Series With so much of the new anime from Japan being mostly of junk quickies with such titles as Guyver, Macross II and whatever, heres something new. Well, you might say something quite old. Giant Robo is a rather new OAV series about an alternate earth where a new energy source was discovered in the 1950s or so and replaced fossil fuels, Nuclear energy with something much cleaner and reusable... (not to sure on that) but EVERYTHING is powered by the same energy type. From cigarette lighters to mac-trucks to giant robots. And an evil group wants to use a modifed and enhanced form of this energy cell for some reason... I think a black hole or something like it. As stated above... Anime, in general nowadays, is animated cheaply... compare the old AKO OAVs to the new stuff etc etc... even Video Girl Ai is effect by this trend (but still well done). Well some group decided to do things the OLD fashion way. The character designs don't go for the "human" look, but the old 60's Japanese anime style (A bit cleaner though) all the mecha and building are of the old styles... Overall it like watching an OLD anime series thats pictyre perfect. The animation is SUPER! When I first watched this, I didn't KNOW it was an OAV... I thought it was a movie and was puzzled because it wasn't letterbox. Until a friend said it was an OAV! The ACTION is great, the animation is SUPER, the detail is amazing, the story is great, the music is damn good. This is the kinda stuff that makes anime worth watching! I don't care for "robot" flicks...this is a ROBOT flick, but take it for what it is, its a GREAT OAV! The world of this series (6 - 30min eps) is kinda like Batman (movie & animation put together), its a bit dark in the year 202x with cars looking like strange early 60s cars... Which MAY happen... notice how new cars are getting CURVY and moving towards the OLD/new look... like the new RX-7 and other Mazdas... even Ford has a new car for 95 that looks very OLD-fashion, yet modern. Tired of lousy plots and characters of cheap anime... you should love this! Rating: anime: 10, Story:8 Characters: 8 I put Giant ROBO up there with Gundam 0083. ------------ Part 3.3 From: Bruce Carlson [Recieved as a Fidonet Message] Subj: Ranma 1/2 Movie I'm not much of a Ranma fan, and I don't follow the TV series. As a result I didn't recognize some of the characters in the new Ranma movie. However, I rather liked the movie. First, it had flying sailing ships. Second, it was a good character story, involving Ranma, Akane, and Shampoo, and giving them some chance, thru the usual slapstick, to actually be people. The animation was the usual short-movie version - i.e., on a par with Silent Mobius. Not a great film, but watchable. I expect real Ranma fans will go wild for it. Cheers, - B:C RATINGS: Art: 5 Animation: 6 Action: 6 Plot: 5 Character: 6 Music: 5 Blood n Guts: 5 Slimey Tentacles: 0 Hunks: 4 Babes: 5 Mecha: 3 Sexual content: 5 Perversion: 9 Chills: 4 Comedy: 7 Tears: 1 ============================================================================= Section 4 Ooooooo! Expect to see the original 8SVX files in the future! ------------ Part 5.2 From: thmartin@remus.rutgers.edu (Theresa Martin) To: Larry.Clevenger@mtask.omahug.org Subject: Love - Do you remember? (MACROSS: THE MOVIE) For those of you who don't understand Japanese, English translations accompany the romaji. And for those who do, the kanji itself follows in Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) codes. However, since local state and university regulations prohibit us from broadcasting ESC codes, they've been censored out with the characters "^[". [I think I put the ESC back in. Does it work? -ed.] All of these songs and many more can be ordered by anonymous ftp from romulus.rutgers.edu (128.6.13.2). Ask for pub/anime/lyrix. [Fraulein Martin _does_ welcome the reader's e-mail. If you have any comments or corrections about the translations or the songs, she would like to hear from you. -ed.] This song is perhaps one of the more popular songs, sang by the (in)famous anime idol singer Lynn Minmei. It was sung during the climactic battle of the Macross movie of the same name, the title theme, "Ai - oboeteimasu ka". Ai - oboeteimasu ka (Love - Do you remember?) This is a brief invitation to you to let you know that GEnie's JAPAN round table is going great and building new members. Also, we've recently established a CATagory for Japanese animation and manga (comic books) for anyone on GEnie to participate in. Japanese animation (called "anime" by the Japanese and rhyming with "spam-away") has picked up a lot of fans here in America since the early seventies. If you ever watched Kimba the White Lion, Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets, Marine Boy, and of course Robotech, you have seen what we're talking about. (Ultraman and Johnny Socko and his Flying Robot were two more examples of the genre, although they weren't animated.) We've got quite a few 'Techies, Orange Roadies, Bubblegum Crisarians and Star Blazers on our little anime mini-round table, and we're building a library of anime-related files (film synopsies, role-playing games, song translations, and so on) building in the download section. I'm really happy about the board, and if you'd be interested in getting into it, please stop by and say Konnichi Wa. We're located on the JAPAN-RT, accessible by typing JAPAN, on CAT 5. We'll leave a light on for you. Does the idea of having a Veritech fighter in reality excite you? Are you an ROTC student or a member of the armed forces who likes the idea of having future warfare with hi-tech weaponry? I invite you to partcipate in a interesting echo, where discussion of Mecha prevails. Here, you can discuss the Mecha of various anime, such as the Hardsuits of BUBBLEGUM CRISIS, the 'Labors from PATLABOR. Discuss the physics behind the Mecha, such as how to power the suits. Discuss how one can arm the Mecha, and how worthy such a suit can be in battle. And more! If you would like to participate, feel free to contact one of the following boards via netmail to feed into the future of battlefield technology! We are short by two systems, so please ask your friendly SysOp to pick it up, so we can be classified as a backbone echo. Traffic is light, yet the possibilities are endless! Gavigan) Subj: CNN anime piece Anime Newspiece on CNN Headline News "Animated cartoons have not enjoyed a good reputation. Critics claim old shows such as Speed Racer were poorly produced. But Dennis Michael reports current projects are getting more recognition." [toss to the story] Dennis Michael : "To the uninitiated, this might look a little like Cabbage Patch Kids saving the universe, [ed. showing scenes from Gall Force] but this is a typical 'anime' sequence. Stylized characters, and highly techincal equipment and lots of of loud, violent action." "One of the keystones of Japanese popular culture, comic books, called 'manga', the best of them are made into animated films, 'anime', and there are lots of them.." John O'Donnell: "Each year, some 30 to 40 feature films are released, over 300 to 400 animations are relased each year directly to video, every week on prime time tv there are upwards of 20 continuing series. So anime plays a much larger part of the Japanese entertainment universe than in America at this time." Carl Macek: "If you like science fiction, if you like action and you like cartoons, you get it all in one package. You get high graphics, you get colorful action sequences, you get really strong science fiction storytelling, and it's easy to watch, very very breezy kind of entertainment." DM: "But make no mistake, Japanese anime is not the Smurfs, it's not something that you toss on the vcr for the kids. Anime specializes in violence, sometimes quite brutal. And surprisingly enough, there is even a generous helping of sex as well. American audiences have begun getting a dose of anime. Some films have been released theatrically, and many more have come out on home video. Along with the heavy metal style science fiction, anime delves into a variety of genres, from high school comedy to the first animated adult horror film, Vampire Hunter D. Right now the american audience for anime can be described as a cult. But it's a cult that's growing." Carl: "Once people start to see it , and more and more people see it and more and more people talk about it, it can possibly become a mainstream item. The only way it can I think is if it gets on television in a prominent way." DM: "and that's all ready beginning. Rocker Matthew Sweet, a fan of anime, has made two rock videos with the help of Japanese manga cartoons." Matthew Sweet: "While you're switching the channels and you see this weird animation from mars or something on the tv and it has music going behind it, you're going to stop and go 'what is that?' and watch it for a while. DM: "and you may be surprised, and occasionally shocked at what you see... Dennis Michael, CNN entertainment news." ^^^^^^^ {emphasis on 'shocked' when showing a scene as Doris fires at the creature from the beginning of Vampire Hunter D. Actually I thought it would have worked better with that line if a UY clip would've been used.} Quite a different treatment than nearly anything previously done in the media about anime, and gee they actually called it 'anime' and actually did an informative piece rather than an exploitative 'Current Affair' type tabloid story.
